It's in our nature to only think about diet and health when something goes wrong.

Like when our yearly check-up and blood work raises red flags. Or a big health scare forces us to make immediate changes.

This is what happened to my Mom.

In 2018, she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Further blood tests showed her one kidney was only functioning at 18%. With that diagnosis, along with her lifelong treatment of high blood pressure and being in the early stages of type 2 diabetes, my Mom was left with multiple obstacles to overcome.

After a lifetime of living on the standard American diet, her body finally said, "ENOUGH!"

The new and improved plan? Turn her diet upside down and fill her with lots of fresh, whole foods - like colorful vegetables, bright fruits, lean proteins, and healthy grains. And out went the added sugars, salt, refined carbs, and high saturated fats.

Fast forward four years later…

  • My Mom is cancer-free.

  • Her prescription blood pressure medication went from three pills to one.

  • And she manages her diabetes through her diet, not with medication.

  • Oh! And that one kidney? It now functions at 38%!

Now that she is more conscious of what she eats and the nutrients she feeds her body, my Mom is recovering and thriving.

So, why do I share that with you?

David Curlis, Founder & Personal Chef

During my career as a chef in hospitals and senior care, I saw how our diet impacts our overall health. That experience and perspective grew into a passion for culinary nutrition and a desire to help people improve their health - and resulting happiness - through a plant-centered diet.

The truth? We can attribute several of the leading causes of death in the U.S. - heart disease, stroke, and diabetes - to poor diet.

I lost four of my grandparents to one or more of these diseases.

That doesn't have to be your story.

Here's the good news: we can live longer, fuller lives and have more time with those we care about most by eating a healthier diet.

I'm on a mission to spread the word about the importance of a plant-centered diet.

It's simple, really:

  • Change your diet, change your health.

  • Eat better to feel better.

Refresh Kitchen guides people looking to include more plants in their diet to feel better through personal chef services, cooking classes, and online education.
